Each June, the city of Cromwell, Connecticut looks forward to hosting the Travelers Championship. This professional tournament occurs over several days at the TPC River Highlands golf course, which covers 6,841 yards over 70 holes. It draws in attendance that has hit record highs of 400,000 fans! The Traveler’s Championship was founded in 1952. Since its inception, Lux Bond & Green has been the tournament’s official trophy maker, sans two years when the Championship was associated with Buick, from 2004-2006. We are so pleased to have kept this historic partnership alive. The fact that each Traveler’s champion has an original, hand-crafted Lux Bond & Green award in their collection makes us proud to do what we do.
Most recently, the Travelers Championship took place in late June 2021. This year, fans went wild when Harris English ousted Kramer Hickok with a birdie in the eighth playoff hole. English earned himself $1,332,000, the lions’ share of the 7.4 million dollar purse. This is English’s first Travelers Championship win. He played well against ten returning champions looking for another win, including Bubba Watson, who has three Travelers Championships under his belt (2010, 2015, and 2018), as well as the 2019 winner Chez Reavie, and the 2016 winner Russell Knox. Five of the top ten best golfers in the world played in the 2021 Travelers Championship, which included 156 players total. After a year with no fans present due to COVID-19, the 2021 Travelers Championship allowed around 10,000 spectators to enter the golf course daily.
Lux Bond & Green’s involvement and support with the Travelers Championship goes beyond the trophy, to additional prizes such as hole-in-one contests over the years. Lux Bond & Green has given away over $200,000 worth of watches and jewelry on the par 3’s throughout the years. In 2016, Ernie Els made a brilliant hole-in-one on the 16th hole, which Lux Bond & Green recognized with a Rolex Yachtmaster II watch. He was absolutely thrilled, and as his wife said, over his lifetime of worldwide wins (71 to be exact), this was the first time that he had been presented a gift for a hole-in-one during a tournament. It’s these special moments that make our collaboration with the Travelers Championship so meaningful to us. We’ve also been pleased to join forces with the Travelers Charities on Women’s Day during the Championship, which has raised millions of dollars for charities local to the Championship region.
