In The Spotlight: Roberto Coin

Roberto Coin is a prestigious jewelry designer, innovative master of technology, and longtime friend of Lux Bond & Green. When then CEO, Bob Green, met Roberto Coin in Basel Switzerland in the 1970s, they struck up a bond worth more than its weight in gold. The two became lifetime friends early on in Roberto Coin’s artistic career. Roberto was a successful hospitality industry professional, when in 1977, he decided to follow his passion into the fine jewelry world. He first found his calling in the Italian city known for its gold, Vicenza, near his boyhood home in Venice. By 1996, he had launched his brand with the introduction of the Appassionata Collection. The signature texture that defines this collection was two years in the making, as Roberto searched for the ingenuity that would allow woven gold to be as flexible as cloth. Worth the wait, the result offers flowing links of golden boxes that hug the wearer’s skin. More than twenty years later, the Appassionata Collection is still hugely popular and fashionable today.

Roberto Coin’s jewelry is where technique meets beautiful design. In a constant search for innovation, Roberto Coin has always kept the wrist, fingers, ears, and neck in mind. His designs incorporate a signature—a small solo ruby hidden on the inside of bracelets, the posts of earrings, the bands of rings, and the clasps of necklaces. According to legend, a ruby kissing the skin enforces the wearer with magic and good fortune. For the owner of Roberto Coin jewelry, knowing that there is a hidden ruby inside of your gorgeous gold jewelry is enough to produce that allure!

The Green family was drawn to Roberto Coin not only because of his excellence in jewelry design, but also because of his character. Strong ethics translate to the Roberto Coin company, which guarantees that all materials, metals, and gemstones, are sourced through socially and environmentally responsible methods.

In addition to the Appassionata Collection, Roberto Coin’s other collections offer classic and elegant lines, partnered with cutting-edge inventions. The Symphony Collection is no exception. Pieces like the sleek Diamond Symphony Bangle featuring 18K white gold and 0.28 cts. of total diamonds offers a combination so beautiful it fits the collection’s title. Studded bracelets and rings from the Pois Mois Collection offer a more modern taste, with bracelets like the 18k yellow gold Pois Mois Square Bangle, featuring bubbled gold dots of granulation and a small window of pave diamonds, or with rings like the 18k yellow gold Pois Mois Luna Pave Diamond Band, which has a textured, granulated gold surface speckled by round diamonds in varying sizes.

Forever innovating in his use of gold, the Roberto Coin New Barocco Collection as well as the Princess Flower Collection, features 18k white and yellow strands twisted like rope into open-hatch and criss-cross patterns. The Princess Flower Diamond Earrings have twisted exterior borders and incorporate round diamonds into each petal. Strung along an 18k yellow gold chain, like the Princess Flower Diamond Pendant, the jewelry in this collection is feminine with a hand-hewn appeal.

Roberto Coin is also a master of illusion. The Navarra collection creates the appearance of interlocking gold ovals, while the surface design is actually flat. The Navarra Diamond Ring in 18k yellow gold with diamonds and its wider sister, the Navarra Diamond Cuff Ring, are excellent examples of this impressive technique. The Obelisco collection draws on early civilization pyramid shapes, and gives each surface three-dimensionality in pieces such as the 18k white gold and flexible Obelisco Bangle Bracelet with diamond accents. The 18k rose gold Obelisco Lapis Pendant features circular links and a diamond lined medallion in a look that blends traditional Italianate chains, with a more ancient air.
