But before we get started, there are a few things you should know. Here, we’ll walk you through some key steps to designing your dream engagement ring, so that together, we can arrive at the ring that’s just right for the two of you.

THE DIAMOND

Let’s start with the centerpiece. If you plan to use an heirloom diamond that you already possess, you can skip ahead to settings (Lux Bond & Green can help you with that!). But for many, choosing a diamond marks the beginning of the design process. Lux Bond & Green’s website features a helpful diamond search tool, which lets you browse around 1,800 loose diamonds! You’ll discover all the facets that make up the appearance and value of a diamond – the cut, the clarity, the carats – come together. If you don’t see what you want, call or email us because our diamond cutters from around the world probably have the perfect stone, at the right price every day. Then, you can make an appointment to see specific diamonds in person.

As you use this handy diamond search tool to design your own engagement ring, it’s a good idea to brush up on the “four C’s.” The four C’s were developed by the Gemological Institute of America and became the international standard to indicate cut, clarity, color, and carat weight of any given diamond. Cut is closely related to the art and physics of cutting and polishing a diamond. When analyzing round shaped stones, the more exact the cut, the more brilliant and fiery the diamond will be, for round-shaped stones. It should be noted that the GIA or other laboratory reports do not determine what makes a stone beautiful. This is something that only you and your loved ones can decide, and it may not always equate to the dollar value of a diamond.

Besides traditional diamond shapes such as round, oval and cushion cut, there are so many other options, like emerald cut, princess, marquise, and radiant. Have you heard your beloved admiring Lady Gaga’s heart-shaped diamond engagement ring, Cardi B’s pear-shaped diamond, J-Lo’s gorgeous emerald cut, or Meghan Markle’s three-stone stunner? If she has a specific shape in mind,

it’s easy to narrow in on the diamond for her engagement ring. In addition to cut and shape, you’ll need to also consider the other C’s.

Carat: this is a measurement that determines the weight of the diamond. You can expect higher prices from larger stones. Depending on the design of the ring and your budget, you may want to consider a larger or smaller central stone. Lux Bond & Green diamonds range all the way from less than a quarter carat, to 9.84 carats! There is something for every engagement ring budget in our diamond collection.

The final two “C” factors, color and clarity, affect both the diamond’s personality and its value. Again, consider personal tastes and preferences with these choices. Clarity rates the presence or absence of natural inclusions, like crystals, feathers, or clouds inside of the stone. Truly flawless stones are very rare and valuable. However, inclusions may not necessarily affect the diamond’s beauty and most inclusions are only seen under a microscope. A wide range of diamonds are available at Lux Bond & Green, from a colorless diamond (rated at a D, E, or F) to diamonds with tiny hints of yellow, green, gray or brown (G through W). There are also diamonds in unique tones like canary yellow, pink, blue, chocolate, black, and cognac to choose from for your custom engagement ring. Many of these can be seen by the naked eye and we can help you determine what’s best for you.

THE SETTING

Have you studied your C’s? Now it’s time to move on to “S”, or; designing your engagement ring’s setting. This can be akin to purchasing a new piece of art and then finding the perfect frame. There are a few components to choosing an engagement ring setting, including choosing the metal type, band shape, and ring head style. Options range from prong to tension, to channel, bezel, flush settings, and more. There are a lot of names for settings, so sometimes it’s best to see the options for yourself.

For inspiration, preview our selection of pre-set engagement rings, and allow our specialists to guide you in finding the settings and stones that you like best. You can also browse settings, which are sold without the center stone, such as this Michael Bondanza platinum band with eternity diamonds and a four-prong setting for the center stone. This 18k white gold half bezel mounting, also by Michael Bondanza, has a modern look and feel. If you’re looking for simple and classic, try this 18k white gold, four-prong solitaire setting by Precision Set, made for a one-carat diamond.

If she’s admired the on-trend look of smaller diamonds accompanying the central diamond, we would suggest browsing halo style and eternity or half eternity band engagement rings. For instance, pretty rings like this halo setting in platinum with a high profile pave mounting is perfect for an oval stone. In any case, browsing the wide variety of setting options at Lux Bond & Green will provide ideas and creativity, and guide you closer towards your perfect, custom engagement ring.
