Panerai watches were always produced in small quantities; indeed it has been
calculated that only about 300 pieces of the earlier models were made from the
very start until 1992, and these were produced exclusively for two navies in
the Mediterranean.
So for many years the watches have been sought after by collectors all over
the world, and at specialist auctions it is not unusual to see great battles
being fought to win the best pieces. Watches have been found in collections
in countries as far afield as Russia, Japan and the United States, where they
were probably brought by allied troops on their return from the Second World
War. These watches are often in exceptional state of preservation, proof of
the care with which they have been looked after and a testimony to their technical
and historic value.
